Puzzles!
Today’s puzzle games are quite different from each other, which, taking into account how many similar games we can find, is actually saying a lot.
For starters we have Connect It, which is a nice machine-themed flash game. Your goal here is, as the name suggests, getting to connect something – chains, in this case, by means of a metal rod. How is it that you can move the rod, you ask? Well, you need to use the wheels that you have to locate in strategic places. It all comes down to your sense of engineering, you see. The number of pieces available increases as levels go, and each new stage brings a more difficult challenge to be overcome. Then again, that is usually the case.
Now, as far as avatars go, we have encountered a wide range of possibilities. However, Use Boxmen, our second game of the day, makes use of none of them: Boxmen are unlike anything we have ever seen before. This creatures are easily controlled with the arrow keys in your keyboard, and their goal in life is to reach the white box lodged somewhere in your screen. Of course that is no simple feat, and therein lies the challenge of the game, in getting your boxman and his boxmen friends (who appear whenever you hit the shift key) to achieve their goal at whatever cost and whatever sacrifice is required.
Monkeymetric, in turn, stars a (wait for it) monkey. Come to think about it, this game is pretty much something out of Planet of the Apes, for there is even a precise mythology behind it (how does that apply to the game, I do not know). Each level presents a different stage with a series of switches that need to be hit in order to allow your avatar to reach his destination. Complex scenarios may imply the need to hit each of them more than once in a quite deliberate sequence, in order to achieve your goal. As a result, memory plays an important part in succeeding in this game.
Finally, Antiquities Storehouse is quite similar to Maya’s Treasure, which I reviewed some four months ago. Truth be told, observations regarding that game perfectly apply to this one as well: awesomely realistic graphics, brain wrecking riddles. The huge problem here is that there are absolutely no clues whatsoever regarding the way to solve the game (for a more comprehensive description and further explanations see above, re: brain wrecking riddles), which means that you have three options: 1- trust your mental abilities and stick with it til you figure it out (and run the risk of dying a very frustrated person), 2- trust your mental abilities and stick with it until you get so frustrated that you cannot think straight anymore, which might make you want to give up flash puzzle games altogether, and 3- trust your mental abilities and stick with it long enough to acknowledge the fact that you need to make use of the walkthrough option that appears in the upper right side of your screen. Whatever you choose, I guarantee you will be entertained enough for a long while.
