Racing Fun

As I started today’s Racing Games review, I immediately thought of movies such as Gone in 60 Seconds (either of the two versions, but diverting one’s attention from Angelina Jolie is a difficult task, so you know which one I am referring to), The Fast and The Furious saga (is the fourth movie as great as everybody says it is?) and even The Transporter (why not?). All that speed, all the awesome cars; I guess that, after watching any of these movies, all of us came out of the cinema believing we were Michael Schumacher.

So just for my own pleasure, I looked for a game that reminded me of one of them, and that is how I found Drift Runners, which is a bit like The Fast and The Furious: Tokio Drift (great movie, by the way). This is an awesome drift racing game, and while using the keyboard is little difficult in the beginning, getting it right only takes a couple of tries. There are lots of things that make this one worth it: 1) you can choose the color of your car (it seems silly, but imagine buying a baby pink car); 2) there are certain requests you have to meet in order to unlock higher levels (like getting an X number of points, or destroying an X number of objects); and 3) you collect coins that can be used to buy new car parts. Pretty neat, huh?

The second game of the day is Monster Truck Nitro. This is a race against time, but the real star of the game are all the old cars and obstacles that you will destroy in the process – let’s admit it, all of us have gone through that time in our lives in which we just want to have a monster truck to crush    an ex-girl/boyfriend’s    cars. The extra feature here, is – as the title says – the nitro that you activate by pressing the Ctrl key: use it wisely, and it will help you accomplish some super jumps.

Then we have Street Challenger, which is one of those games that you play with your friends in your free time just to spend a good time and see who is the best; it is fun when you have someone to challenge. The aim of the game is collecting all the green lights with your car, and as the name of the game suggests this is no easy feat: take care because it really is harder than it seems (or maybe I am just a lousy player, that’s another very real option).

However, the “catchiest story” award goes to Vengeance Rider. It begins with a comic-like presentation, and you know me — I love comics, so that’s more than enough for me to play the game. The story talks about a gang named Skull Riders whose reckless driving caused our avatar’s family to die in a crash. So, as he very well puts it, he “lost everything [he] held dear because of them… and now’s time… to pick them off, one by one”. How is that for an action-packed racing game?

In the end, there might be different approaches to the racing concept, but the result is one and the same: entertainment.
