Ninja Times
Today’s four action games are dedicated to a special topic: Ninjas. I know, we probably should have had that one covered when I reviewed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game a while ago, but, er, no. It turns out the number of ninja-themed games is impressive, so I set out to review only four of these — and believe me, there is material for a couple more reviews. The games featured today are somehow similar to others that have already been reviewed, but with this martial arts twist.
Ninja Brawl is somehow similar to Stick Brawl, for obvious reasons. The game is entirely controlled through the keyboard, which is something different from most our games. You can choose your avatar among 3 ninjas (further into the game you will be able to unlock more) and start punishing the bad guys who have set the village on fire. There are four types of attack, including throwing shurikens and bombs (which is a lot less orthodox, martial arts-wise, but still wicked cool if you ask me), and you can also switch through different weapons. In addition, you can also heal yourself by drinking a health potion. There are two levels of difficulty, so you can sort of train first and then dive into the fun.
Ninja Guiji is similar to Ultimate Assasin 2, although a lot better as regards graphics. The premise is pretty much the same, you have to make your way assassinating guys; however, the game itself presents a few differences. On one hand, while Ultimate Assasin 2 was a pain in the butt at the time of making your avatar flee the crime scene, this game is a lot simpler, presenting only one way to go. And, on the other hand, Ninja Guiji allows your future victim to realize he is about to be killed, and fight back. For that, you have four different kinds of weapons (including your own hands and geet). However, your enemies vary in combat expertise, so you might want to choose your battles carefully. These are samurais after all!
Ninja Combat, on the other hand, is quite bizarre as martial arts-themed games go. Your avatar here is a sort of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon character, with all the flying he does! You fight against the forces of the dreaded Tsumani-Dragon, which of course outnumber you. A piece of cake, provided you use your shuriken shooting skills wisely!
And then Ninja Keys is an entirely different kind of game, a bit like Super Mario Ninja, if you will, or maybe Snakes and Ladders. Here you have to make your way up and down the levels using the ladders while collecting the keys. Of course there is a bad guy, and this particular one can also go up and down while chasing you. Safety then lies in your wise use of the ladders in order to collect the keys before the black and blue ninja catches you.
