Oldies Fun

What’s in a word? What do we mean when we talk about something that is ‘classic’? When I first found the category at BGames, I immediately thought it would be full of flash versions of the first developed video games. However, the dictionary definition of the word tell us that classic is something “of the first or highest quality, class, or rank; serving as a standard, model, or guide”. That is quite a promise, if we expect it to be fulfilled by the games we find in the aforementioned section.

Avoidster is a classic game in many ways. It is quite similar to Behind Golden Bars, which has already been reviewed, in that you control a square that needs to move as fast as possible away from the moving obstacles that continuously appear in the screen. The difference is that obstacles are much more varied here: different shapes, sizes and modes; from geometrical figures thrown at you from different sides of the screen, to giant rectangles that sweep the entire screen. Smart fun, serving as a model or guide.

Super PSTW is a game that actually disoriented me when I first played it, but the mystery was solved the minute I found out what ‘PSTW’ stands for: Press Space To Win. That is what the game is all about: it is an RPG game, not unlike others that have already been reviewed, in which you control your avatar by simply pressing the space bar. Graphics are very very basic, but in any case you can do the same things you do in other RPGs: buy stuff, get some rest, fight villains. And, on top of it, you can actually hear your enemies talk, which is pretty cool in itself.

Zero Wing is a classic in that many, many space shooting games have followed its model. The game is quite simple: it’s year 2101… and that is pretty much all you need to know about the non-existent (better yet, non-comprehensible: the intro seems written in translator’s day off) story behind the game. You control a space ship that must destroy everything that crosses its path.  The spacecraft is fairly easy to control, and though it moves a bit slow for my taste, enemy spaceships are quite fast themselves. You can make use of different attacks and maximize your ability for destruction. No wonder the original version of the game became a guide for all space games that followed!

Finally, we have Nostradamus Shooter. This is also a space-themed shooting game, but make no mistake: this is something else. For starters, you can choose from two different characters: Dalas and Johanna. In second place, your spacecraft has a lot more mobility. And thirdly, enemies are varied in number and kind, and no piece of cake whatsoever. You get upgrades as you go along, but the normal development of the game calls for smarter and bolder moves as time passes. A classic game in each and every sense of the word.

The Classic games section holds many surprises, but excellence is the criterion for selection.
