Four Featured Games at Bgames
There are times in your life when you just have to toss the dice and see what happens, you know? That is exactly what I thought today as I went into BGames and immediately saw today’s featured games. I knew nothing about them, not even the kind of game they were. Still, I figured that life is all about taking risks, so I dove in, head first. This selection is the result.
My first pick was Woobies, and actually, I sort of cheated my own challenge because the game looked familiar. Turns out this is a new version of an old favorite. You have to shoot woobies, in this case, and connect at least three of the same color in order to clear the screen. There are three levels of difficulty, sound is pretty decent, and the fact that you use your mouse to take aim instead of your keyboard makes things infinitely easier… at first, at least.
Secondly, I chose Hold The Line, keeping in mind my very satisfactory past experiences with stickmen games. Here you become some kind of stickman!Rambo, devoted to holding your trench against enemies who upgrade their weaponry as days go by (bastards!). Once again, there are three different levels and many twists and turns to make the game more exciting. You can purchase extra weapons, repair the trench, and nurse yourself back to health once the day ends — provided you make it.
Run Bolt Run was my first real risk. I didn’t even know who Bolt was (apparently he is a big deal at Disney; he shares voice with John Travolta!). I’ll admit that the minute I saw the game classified under “Kids games”, I dreaded my pick. However, I sucked it up and stuck by it, and it paid off: this is a quite entertaining platform game. Bolt is supposed to rescue Penny, his owner (Miley Cyrus! Wait, who?), after charging against an interesting well-varied range of enemies and jumping over many obstacles. That is no piece of cake, of course, because, as a very keen voice reminds us each time Bolt bites the dust, “Ooops genius, you’re not a super dog!”
However, the real gamble of the set was Learn To Fly. I mean, it features penguins. Penguins, for heaven’s sake. Which are supposed to be… cute, not exactly badass game material. Yet here we have this emperor penguin, dead set on proving evil Kiwipedia wrong and showing that he is no “flightless bird” (the intro is kind of awesome, really). You practice jumps on different ramps, unlocked by different achievements, and you can accessorize yourself with different props bought with funds you get according to the merit of your jumps. Pretty hardcore, and pretty addictive too.
See? Sometimes, picking your games in a way that can only be described as a gamble really pays off. Of course, you can always come to this blog, read the reviews and safely avoid any possible headaches and disappointments. That is probably smarter, too
